About the Backgrounder

I created this backgrounder about a fictitious person named Robert “Bert” Wodehouse Mulliner to practice writing a short, professional biography. To do so, I utilized AP Style and other professional writing skills.

Thank you for reading.

This news release was created for JMC 305: Writing for Media, Honors at the University of Kansas in spring 2023.

Robert “Bert” Wodehouse Mulliner

Robert “Bert” Wodehouse Mulliner is the president of MGS Interactive Games in Austin, Texas. Mulliner was named the National Entrepreneur of the Year in 2010 by the United States Chamber of Commerce. Additionally, Mulliner has won the prestigious Game Designer of the Year award from DigitalGameWorld Magazine five times, more than anyone else.

Mulliner was born on Jan. 18, 1975, in San Diego, to Sally Wooster Mulliner and Clarence Mulliner. Sally Mulliner is now a retired dentist, and Clarence Mulliner is an architect in Coronado, a suburb of Chicago. Mulliner also has an older sister, Martha Matthews, who is the U.S. Ambassador to Costa Rica.

In 1997, Mulliner received a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Southern California. Two years later, Mulliner completed a master’s in electrical engineering from the University of Oregon.

After completing his education, Mulliner was a design engineer for a year at Fulton Digital Games in Boulder, Colorado. Then, Mulliner moved to Austin and was a program code writer at Longhorn Analytics for two years. In 2002, Mulliner founded MGS Interactive Games. MGS stands for Mulliner, George Gershwin and Stevie Ray Vaughan because Mulliner says that he listens to music from Gershwin and Vaughan when designing games.

Outside of work, Mulliner can be found volunteering in the community with Habitat for Humanity and an Austin homeless shelter. Mulliner says that he also enjoys reading and watching the Tour de France. In 2005, Mulliner married Jill, a physical therapist. They live in Georgetown, Texas, with their three children (Karen, Leo and Rosie) and three pets (a dog named Jake, a cat named Henry and a gecko named CoCo).
